I’ve been a healthcare professional for over 20 years – you can see the breadth of experience I have on the next page. I found that the human body is fascinating machine, from individual cell structure to multi-organ synergy, but what happens when something goes wrong? Modern medicine is very good at labelling something and providing a solution to that particular problem, but sometimes something can’t be pigeon-holed.
Pain is a good example of this. The term ‘soft tissue’ applies to anything that isn’t bone, be it skin, fascia, muscle and everything else in between. Modern medicine may address pain by the prescription of painkillers, but I increasingly found a lack in addressing any underlying soft tissue dysfunction, which often gets labelled as “musculoskeletal pain”.
My experience of this is both personal and professional. I was thrown by a horse in 2012, and whilst nothing was broken, I’ve since experienced chronic back pain. The professional approach was exercise and painkillers. The personal one was a combination of lifestyle changes, weight loss, and becoming more self-aware of how my emotional health affects my physical health, and vice versa. I had no desire to become another healthcare-sponsored addict, and found that sports massage was the only thing that gave me lasting relief.
This resulted in developing an interest in sports medicine, and whilst I enjoyed learning about it, I also learned that little regard was given to soft tissue dysfunction. It was only through doing courses in Sports Massage that I really understood the methodologies and techniques to provide benefit, all without opiate-based pharmaceuticals, and facilitating collaborative approaches to provide tailored care for clients.
In November 2023 I made the decision to leave professional healthcare, and use my interests in sports medicine, alternative therapy and holistic care to better serve myself and my clients. I look forward to helping you!
